FAQ

How do you go from gross to net in Switzerland?

Mandatory social contributions are deducted from the gross salary — AHV/IV/EO at 5.30%, unemployment insurance at 1.10%, BVG by age bracket and non-occupational UVG — then, for cross-border workers and B/L permit holders, withholding tax. Swiss nationals and C permit holders are not taxed at source: they file an annual tax return instead.

Are contributions the same in every canton?

Yes. AHV, unemployment insurance and BVG are federal, so the rates are identical across Switzerland. Only tax varies by canton and even by municipality, which accounts for almost the entire net-pay gap between Zurich, Geneva and Basel.

What is the coordination deduction?

It is the portion of salary already covered by AHV, removed before the BVG calculation. It stands at CHF 26,460 in 2026, so your BVG contribution only applies to the annual salary above that amount.

How accurate is this calculator?

It provides a realistic estimate based on 2026 rates (AHV 5.3%, ALV 1.1%, BVG by age, UVG 1.1%). Cantonal tax is an approximation — actual tax depends on your commune, deductions and exact family situation.

Which cantons are covered?

The main Romandie and German-speaking cantons: ZH, GE, VD, BE, BS, LU, ZG, TI, SG, AG. Tax rates are weighted cantonal averages.

Is the 13th salary included?

Yes, included by default (checked box): annual gross is computed over 13 months. Uncheck the box to simulate a contract without a 13th salary.
